It's always interesting to see how different school districts work and how different each state is. Today I took both boys to two different schools within the Pasco area. Keenan had an IEP (individualized Education Plan) meeting at Capt. Gray School. Basically what they do is go over goals that you want them to work on. Intersting thing, it's a school of only Kindergartners. Never heard of that one before!
Keenan will be in a preschool with about 6 other kids that also have speech impairments. His goals are:
He will participate in play and book activities to engage in joint attention with an adult or peer with 80% accuracy
Point correctly to familiar objects/pictures with 80% accuracy
Follow one-step directions in play context with 80% accuracy
Request desired items by name by 80% accuracy
Of course these things sound so simple but they are what needs to be worked on. He is doing tons better then he was back in May so he has made amazing progress! Im excited to see what this school year brings for him and see him succeed. He will be ready Tuesday afternoon with batman backpack on his back! He already loves the room he will be in!
We also registered Damon at Maya Angelou Elementary, which was a little different then I expected. He has always been in a preschool with other "normal" acting children. Here he is in there with about 5 other kids with special needs ranging from all different capabilities. But I have to admit I am so excited for him because they have standers, swings, sitting chairs, so many things that he will get to use on a daily basis! And I was excited to see that they had the same stander as we do back in Idaho! It's a great thing for him I hope! We do his IEP next tuesday and then we will talk about his goals then. They have his IEP from Idaho so basically his goals will be about the same! And he will be going everyday for half day. The bus will pick and drop him off also making it easier for me.
So here is to a new school year with GREAT results!
